Madina Redco Slum Earmarked for 24-hour Market Project

The La Nkwantanang-Madina Municipal Assembly has announced plans to designate the Madina Redco enclave for the government’s proposed 24-hour market initiative, describing it as a major step toward economic transformation and urban renewal.

The project forms part of a broader policy aimed at transitioning Ghana from a predominantly daytime economy into a round-the-clock system to boost productivity and business activity.

Speaking to Citi News, the Municipal Chief Executive, Ibrahim Faila Fuseini, said the initiative is expected to significantly improve conditions in the Redco area, which has long struggled with congestion, frequent fire outbreaks, and crime.

He disclosed that two separate market projects are planned within the municipality—one within the Madina township and another at the Redco enclave.

“We have two market projects—one within the Madina council area and another at the Redco slum enclave. These are the areas selected for the 24-hour economy initiative. His Excellency John Dramani Mahama recognises the potential of Madina, and that is why the two projects are being situated here,” he said.

Mr Fuseini explained that the decision reflects strong confidence in Madina’s thriving commercial base and its capacity to support the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.

He noted that the high level of business activity within the Madina Central Business District, particularly from Family Junction through to the Assembly area, positions the municipality as a natural hub for extended economic operations.

“If you look at the level of business activity within the central business district—from Family Junction through to the Assembly area—you will realise it is already vibrant. Creating an enabling environment for a 24-hour system means the government is directly investing in the people,” he added.

According to the Municipal Chief Executive, the initiative is expected to stimulate local commerce, improve livelihoods, enhance urban conditions, and create new economic opportunities for residents.
